Not Impressed

I was impressed with this community at first, but I had never rented before so I didn't know what to expect. I thought the neighborhood looked nice and the townhomes were quaint, but the advertisements all over the lawn and balloons at the entrance are a little embarrassing and tacky. However, that is just my personal taste.
After my family moved in, we began noticing imperfections here and there. There are nicks and dings in the stove that were covered up with the same paint that was used on the walls. The linoleum in the kitchen floor is not secured down at the edges of the cabinets and curls up. Our patio had obviously not been cleared before we moved in because there were empty beer cans and a rusted coat hanger on the ground. Electrical outlets were left without covers. The tub needed sealing caulk. We mentioned these things on our move-in checklist but the problems were never addressed.
At the signing of our lease, we were told that each townhouse resident is allowed 2 parking spaces in front of their home. When we purchased a 3rd car, we asked permission of the staff and also of our neighbors to park the 3rd car here as well. Several of the townhomes that share our parking lot are vacant and there are plenty of parking spaces. We were given permission to park the 3rd car. Shortly thereafter, we received a nasty note in our door that stated each resident is only allowed ONE parking space and also that we need to ask our guests to park as far away from our door as they can, to allow space for other renters to park. They also threatened that our 3rd car would be towed. We reminded them that we were given permission to have our 3 cars here, yet we still received this letter once more before the problem was resolved.
I am pleased with our square footage and the fact that we have a full basement. We are also given free reign with gardening around our entrance. They gave us a great deal on rent which is the main reason we are here. However, privacy is limited and some neighbors are not respectful of others at night. We frequently hear yelling, loud stereos and cars screeching in the late hours.
We had one experience in particular that really turned us off to this community. Our financial situation caused us to have to be late on rent on one occasion. We paid a few days later, including the late fee. Over a week later, we were approached by a staff member as my husband and I were leaving our home, daughter in tow. She informed us that they couldn't accept a personal check for a delinquent payment, and that they needed a money order by the next day - right in front of our neighbors! This was embarrassing enough for us, and I feel that kind of financial matter should be handled privately in the office.
Also, we received a very rude phone call from the office recently. My husband was asked in a threatening tone if we intended to continue living here, or if he was going to make his delinquent rent payment any time soon including legal fees. He informed the staff member that he had already paid 2 weeks ago. After they re-checked their information, they told us that they had applied our payment to the wrong account but did not apologize for their mistake.
Overall, although there are some nice features here, I would not recommend this community to a friend or family member.
